i have a ford ,my fan belt was sqeaking so i reved it to stop it then a red light on dashboard came on with a picture of an engine with a cross over it ,then the car started to stop ,and wouldnt start even the battery went flat ,,any one help

can someone also explain why it broke down and why that red light came on with the cross over an engine?
