Default Buying a very used car and not sure if i should buy it. 1986 Chevy Sprint?

hey guys i thought i might ask here to see if someone might have any suggestions.. Im thinking about buying this 86 chevy sprint for 400 bucks...it has like 130k miles.. this is what the buyer says is wrong with it "It smokes when you accelerate hard and the transmission grinds in first and second gear if you don't shift at just the right time" ...now i asked about the smoking and he said it wasnt a head gasket and that "No blown headgasket, I think the oil rings are stuck because the last owner let the oil get sludged up." does that sound like it could be the problem??...as far as the grinding when you shift is that a major problem as well? Im just a broke college student looking for a cheap commuter car that will be somewhat reliable...what do you guys think??
