Default Cleaning cassette player heads in my car?

Has anyone tried to do this with q-tips instead of those head cleaner tapes? I tried a tape but it broke, I think b/c the cassette player tried to rewind it. All the instructions I find online for cleaning with a q-tip say to "press play" then clean it, but obviously I can't get my car's cassette player to play without a tape in it. Any suggestions?
I'm not stuck in the past, I actually have Sirius Radio and use the cassette adapter to listen to it, but it makes noise because it needs to be cleaned!
