I've seen this frequently on GM cars about the age of yours....it usually turns out that the lockup in the torque converter is no longer unlocking properly, leading to a stall. It's easy enough to check, just unplug the blue square connector on the transmission, driver's side. See if the problem goes away. One bad thing, though....while this won't hurt your car, your fuel mileage will drop about 2-4 mpg.
