Default My 1993 Buick Century has not started 3 times when it has either rained or snowed.?

I have had no problems with it starting otherwise. It starts with no problems even when it's below zero. The battery is 1 month old. The radiator is fine. The fuel pump was replaced this summer. It seem like moisture is the problem. This happened twice when it had rained and once when it had snowed within the last 2 months. This never happened before then. The car has been pretty reliable. It starts again after it sits a few days and runs like there was never anything amiss. It appears to run OK after it dries out or something. I was told perhaps it is a cracked distributor cap. I don't even know if this car has that part. I hope someone can help me out soon. Money is extremely tight and I would like an idea of what it could be and what it could cost before I take it to a mechanic. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I had a similar issue with a 1992 Century once.

The crankshaft position sensor was bad. The back of the sensor is covered in epoxy to seal it. The sensor is behind the harmonic balancer at the bottom passenger's side of the engine. The sensor is about $30 bucks, but the labor to replace it is fairly high, as the harmonic balancer has to be removed to get at the sensor.

I was going to suggest that you check spark plug wires first. Robert P beat me to it.

but if this car has the Oldsmobile quad4 it won't even have spark plug wires.

But if it's some other engine that does have them, check there. cheap and easy.

most likely the spark plug wires need to be replaced.

not expensive. change the spark plugs at the same time. check for coupons in your paper for discount prices.
